Disaster prep for pets: evacuating together

Keep a carrier, leash, and pet emergency kit ready at all times — shelters don't always accept pets, so check in advance

01 What to do now

  1. 01

Prepare a dedicated pet emergency kit: at least 3 days of food, drinking water, a bowl, chronic-condition medication, and a copy of vaccination records

  2. 02

Have a carrier ready for cats, and a leash and harness ready for dogs

  3. 03

Post a pet card somewhere visible at home, noting species, number, and emergency contact info

  4. 04

Microchip your pet or fit them with an ID tag that has contact info

  5. 05

Confirm with the local shelter whether pets are allowed before heading there

02 Common myths

  • Assuming a shelter will definitely take your pet: this support is still developing, so always confirm in advance

  • Looking for a carrier only when the emergency happens: get your pet used to the carrier ahead of time instead
