Air raid shelter: telling sirens apart and where to take cover
When you hear the air raid siren, get into a basement, a place marked as an air raid shelter, or an indoor room away from windows
This guide is for Taiwan.
01 What to do now
- 01
Telling the sirens apart
Air raid siren: one 15-second long tone followed by two 5-second short tones, with 5-second gaps between tones, repeated 3 times. All-clear: a continuous 90-second tone
- 02
Choosing where to take cover
Indoors: go to a basement or a room away from windows, and don't use elevators. Outdoors in built-up areas: enter a place marked as an air raid shelter or follow official directions. In open areas: find sturdy cover, or if there's none, lie low in a depression and protect your head. Only leave once you hear the all-clear
- 03
Advance preparation
Know the locations of the nearest air raid shelters to your home, workplace, and school; keep an emergency go-bag ready
02 Common myths
Hesitating to act when you hear the air raid siren: start moving to shelter as soon as it sounds
Staying put if you can't find a basement: at minimum, get indoors and away from windows and exterior walls
