You smell gas — what to do
No sparks, shut it off, open windows, get out — never switch anything electrical on or off
01 What to do now
- 01
No sparks
Don't turn any electrical device on or off (lights, fans, range hood, even your phone) — a single spark or static discharge can trigger an explosion
- 02
Shut it off
Immediately close the main gas valve or the cylinder valve to cut off the source
- 03
Open windows
Gently and slowly open windows to ventilate, letting the gas disperse naturally
- 04
Get out
Leave for a safe outdoor location, call your local emergency number to report it, and contact the gas company for inspection and repair
02 Common myths
Turning on the light to see better: this is the most common fatal mistake — the spark from a light switch is enough to ignite gas
Turning on the range hood to ventilate: the motor starting is also a spark source — equally forbidden
Using a lighter or candle to see: any open flame is absolutely forbidden
